Highland Calves Available from Koolah Creek - 2024

Are you new to keeping cattle? Owning and caring for cattle is a big commitment!

Please ensure you have done plenty of research and that you are able to provide your new pets with a good home and proper care before enquiring! Our Highlands are only available to buyers approved by us. We will not agree to sell if we feel it is not in the best interest of either the animal or or the buyer. The welfare of our animals is our first priority!

The Basics:

  • Cattle are very social animals and they cannot be kept alone - if you do not already have other cattle, you will need to either buy a pair.

  • Cattle require acres of space and cannot be kept in suburban backyards.

  • Our Highlands are exceptionally quiet, but like with any cattle you will need basic handling and restraint facilities in the event that they need vet care in the future (ie basic cattle yards and a headbale/crush).

  • You will need a PIC number (Property Identification Code).

  • Yes, of course!

We actually insist that anyone buying from us must have met us and seen the cattle before we will accept any deposit. We certainly prefer in person visits, but can also organise video calls if distance is an issue (eg interstate buyers).

  • Yes, we offer delivery in our own horse float or cattle truck, which we regularly use to transport our own show cattle. Just chat to us.

  • We keep calves with their dams (mum cow) until they are ready to be weaned at around 6-8 months old. This is the best and healthiest way for calves to grow up.

We start taking deposits on calves from when they are a couple of months old - sign up to our mailing list to be one of the first to find out!

After weaning, the calves spend another few weeks here with us for extensive handling & to finish their formal training. This is to ensure they are happy, friendly, quiet, calm and confident with people before they leave for their new homes. All our calves are also halter trained.

We do not sell bottle babies, poddies or unweaned calves as this is not in the best interest of the animal.

  • Our Highlands are quite small, but they are not bred to be miniature - there are many other important traits that we breed for.

Our mature cows are around 115-120cm tall. They are definitely a lot shorter than standard beef cattle breeds, and most of ours are on the small side for purebred Scottish Highlands. However we do not breed for size, instead we aim to breed for great temperaments and conformation. Miniatures are often bred for small size at the expense of other traits like structural soundness, or sometimes stunted by purposeful underfeeding at critical growth periods. Instead, our calves are healthy, happy and quiet pets - welfare is our first priority.

Purebred Scottish Highlands are a heritage breed. Our stud cows have traditional bloodlines and pedigrees that can be traced back to Scotland! As a smaller sized breed, they are ideal for acreages and hobby farms.

  • Our steer calves are priced around $5,000-$5,500. These make ideal pets.

Our heifers are priced from $9,000-$15,000+, depending on many factors like pet or stud quality, structure, bloodlines, registration, and temperament.

Please keep in mind these prices include our extensive handling program, and halter training. Our calves are friendly and confident with people and make ideal paddock pets - they can be hand fed, brushed, patted, walked on the lead, etc. We spend a huge amount of time producing our calves, which is reflected in the price. They also come with their halter + lead, brush, and printed baby diary.

All our calves come NLIS tagged, with an NVD, up to date with drenching, fully vaccinated (7-in-1, and Pestiguard) and have complete husbandry records.

  • This is a question we receive so fequently that we’ve written a whole page about it! Please read through and feel free to get in touch with any further questions you may have:

  • Our farm is located in Langley Vale, on the New South Wales Mid North Coast, between Taree and Port Macquarie.

We are just 2 hours drive from Newcastle, and 3 hours from the northern side of Sydney.

Sold out? Join our mailing list to be notified when our next calves are available for sale! Almost all of our cattle are sold via our mailing list prior to being listed on the website.

We keep a mailing list rather than a formal waiting list. When we are ready to begin viewings and take deposits on our calves, everyone on the mailing list will receive the sales list via email. Those who have taken the time to register will have the first opportunity to book a meet & greet and make their decision before we list the calves publicly on this page.
