Highland Cows for Sale
At Koolah Creek we breed & sell exceptional Highland cows, bulls, heifers, & calves. Our breeding stock have been carefully selected for the very best pedigree, temperament, sound structure and overall Highland breed character.
Our breeding cows are valued members of our family and have been carefully selected from the best bloodlines in Australia. We place a strong emphasis on exceptionally docile temperaments and sound structure in our stud breeding program - we aim to breed the kind of cattle that we enjoy working with and are a pleasure to own and handle.
Breeding age studstock Highland cows are rarely offered for sale. We sell only a few each year, and there is no set time for this. Preference will be given to AHCS registered breeders, to ensure the continuation of our cows genetics and their contribution to improving the Highland gene pool in Australia.

Ready for her new home: now
Dolly is a sweet natured, beautifully bred, well-mannered Highland cow who has been a favourite in our herd since the day she arrived. While we would love to keep her, we have other close relatives and simply do not have the paddock space to justify holding on to everyone. With that in mind, the difficult decision has been made to offer Dolly to a new home.
Dolly is a pleasure to work with, dopey quiet, and adores brushes - she’s a favourite with our guests and our photographers! She comes when called, will follow you around for a comb, loves hand-fed treats and is easy to move through the yards. During her show seasons, Dolly was haltered freely in the paddock daily, though she has not been haltered for over a year.
We purchased Dolly as a weanling heifer from Stone Ridge Highlands, and transported her from Tasmania. We selected Dolly for her unique pedigree and bloodlines - her sire is Uallach Dubh 6th of Pollock (IMP GBR), bred by one of the largest and most influential folds in the UK, and her dam is an exceptional cow with an equally impressive pedigree.
Dolly has performed strongly in the show ring in her limited outings as a junior, including:
2024 Bathurst Royal Show - Reserve Champion Junior Highland Highland Heifer
2024 Bathurst Royal Show - 1st Highland Heifer 12 - 16 months
2024 Royal Queensland Show (Ekka) - 2nd Highland Heifer 16 - 20 months
2024 Canberra Royal Show - 2nd Highland Heifer 8 - 14 months
Dolly pregnancy tested in calf Larimar of Amrabull Park - the 2024 Australian Highland Cattle Society Supreme Exhibit. His pedigree combines leading UK, USA and Canadian genetics, and we expect Dolly to be several months in calf. Her pregnancy will be confirmed prior to sale. This will be a very exciting calf from two outstanding parents.
Dolly has outstanding maternal traits - she is highly fertile, calved easily, has strong mothering instincts and has excellent udder and teat conformation.
Dolly represents an exceptional two-in-one package - a quality young cow, coastally adapted, and in calf to one of Australia’s best current stud sires. She will be a serious asset to any fold.
If you are interested in purchasing, you will need to arrange a viewing appointment. We prefer visits in person, but virtual (by video call) is also okay. We do not take deposits sight unseen.
In your enquiry, please include:
- Which animal/s you are interested in.
- Where they will be kept, location of your property, your yard facilities, fencing, etc.
- A bit about yourself, your experience with cattle and your plans for the cattle.
- Your preferred dates and times for viewing.
Preference for viewing appointments will be given to those who demonstrate that they have the capacity to provide excellent homes for our cattle.
Are you new to keeping cattle? Owning and caring for cattle is a big commitment!
Please ensure you have done plenty of research and that you are able to provide your new pets with a good home and proper care before enquiring! Our Highlands are only available to buyers approved by us. We will not agree to sell if we feel it is not in the best interest of either the animal or or the buyer. The welfare of our animals is our first priority!
The Basics:
Cattle are very social animals and they cannot be kept alone - if you do not already have other cattle, you will need to either buy a pair.
Cattle require acres of space and cannot be kept in suburban backyards.
Our Highlands are exceptionally quiet, but like with any cattle you will need basic handling and restraint facilities in the event that they need vet care in the future (ie basic cattle yards and a headbale/crush).
You will need a PIC number (Property Identification Code).

Yes, of course!
We actually insist that anyone buying from us must have met us and seen the cattle before we will accept any deposit. We certainly prefer in person visits, but can also organise video calls if distance is an issue (eg interstate buyers).
-
Yes, we offer delivery in our own horse float or cattle truck, which we regularly use to transport our own show cattle. Just chat to us.
-
We keep calves with their dams (mum cow) until they are ready to be weaned at around 6-8 months old. This is the best and healthiest way for calves to grow up.
We start taking deposits on calves from when they are a couple of months old - sign up to our mailing list to be one of the first to find out!
After weaning, the calves spend another few weeks here with us for extensive handling & to finish their formal training. This is to ensure they are happy, friendly, quiet, calm and confident with people before they leave for their new homes. All our calves are also halter trained.
We do not sell bottle babies, poddies or unweaned calves as this is not in the best interest of the animal.
-
Our Highlands are quite small, but they are not bred to be miniature - there are many other important traits that we breed for.
Our mature cows are around 115-120cm tall. They are definitely a lot shorter than standard beef cattle breeds, and most of ours are on the small side for purebred Scottish Highlands. However we do not breed for size, instead we aim to breed for great temperaments and conformation. Miniatures are often bred for small size at the expense of other traits like structural soundness, or sometimes stunted by purposeful underfeeding at critical growth periods. Instead, our calves are healthy, happy and quiet pets - welfare is our first priority.
Purebred Scottish Highlands are a heritage breed. Our stud cows have traditional bloodlines and pedigrees that can be traced back to Scotland! As a smaller sized breed, they are ideal for acreages and hobby farms.
-
Our steer calves are priced around $5,000 each. Steers make ideal pets.
Our heifers are priced from $9,000-$15,000+, depending on many factors like pet or stud quality, structure, bloodlines, registration, and temperament.
The price of breding age cows varies depending on the factors above, as well as their breeding status (pregnancy status or with a calf at foot).
Please keep in mind these prices include our extensive handling program, and halter training. Our calves are friendly and confident with people and make ideal paddock pets - they can be hand fed, brushed, patted, walked on the lead, etc. We spend a huge amount of time producing our calves, which is reflected in the price. They also come with their halter + lead, brush, and printed baby diary.
All our calves come NLIS tagged, with an NVD, up to date with drenching and fully vaccinated (7-in-1).

Join our Cattle Sales Mailing List to be notified when our next Highlands are available for sale!
Almost all of our cattle are sold via our mailing list prior to being listed on the website. If you do not register, you will likely miss out on cattle for sale.
How our cattle sales work: we keep a mailing list rather than a formal waiting list. When we are ready to begin viewings and take deposits, everyone on the mailing list will receive the sales list via email. Those who have taken the time to register will have the first opportunity to book a meet & greet and make their decision before we list the cows publicly on this page.
You can also follow us on Facebook and Instagram for regular updates, incuding the arrival of new calves which may be for sale in the future!
